Leveraged Fund Position Switches to Net USD Short

FOREX

CFTC CoT Update:

  • The shift in USD positioning for leveraged funds in Friday's CFTC update getting plenty of coverage this morning, with the net leveraged position switching to short USD for the first time in just over two years.
  • CoT data shows that the move is largely driven by the persistent rise in the EUR net position, which added another 19k contracts to hit a new cycle high.
  • Elsewhere, the GBP and CHF net positions saw decent gains, although the improvement wasn't enough to lift GBP out of a small net short. By adding to the CHF net long, the CHF position hit a new 52w high and is second to only the EUR on a 52w Z score basis.
  • Despite the recent rally in spot, CAD position deteriorated, with markets dropping over 6,000 contracts on the week, keeping the CAD net position the worst of all currencies surveyed on a % of open interest basis.
