FRANCE

Latest political approval ratings from Ifopshows a decline for both President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne as rising inflationary pressures and fuel shortages caused by strikes at oil refineries hit French households. (Repost with typo corrected)

  • Macron's total approval stands at 40%, down three points from the September reading. He sits in 10th place among the 50 politicians listed by the pollster, down from 6th place the previous month.
  • Borne's total approval is at 43%, also down 3% from last month. She is in sixth place, down from third in September.
  • Macron and Borne's declining approval could prove sustained, with the leftist CGT union voting yesterday to continue blockades of fuel depots and oil refineries that have seen some fuel shortages emerge across the country.
  • The four politicians with the highest approval ratings are all former office holders with former PM Edouard Philippe (+56%), former PM Jean Castex (+49%), former President Francois Hollande (+44%) and former President Nicolas Sarkozy (+44%) topping the poll.
