Malley To Testify To Closed Senate Committee On Iran

SECURITY
The Iran JCPOA talks in Vienna appear to be reaching a conclusion but there is a lack of coherence in Washington about the appropriate strategy to contain Iran’s nuclear program.
  • Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley will testify before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on ‘Iran: Update on Vienna Discussions’ at 10:00 ET 15:00 GMT.
  • Malley briefed members of the House yesterday before talks resumed in Vienna and has succumbed to pressure from lawmakers demanding clarification on the US position. Foreign Relations Committee Chair Robert Menendez (D-NJ) said to the Senate floor last week: ‘What exactly are we trying to salvage?’
  • More than 100 House Republican wrote to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken demanding he withdraw from the Vienna talks and this week a group of senators led by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) have vowed to block any attempt by the Biden administration to return to the 2015 deal.
  • Attempts to block an Iran deal is unlikely to be successful as it is difficult to see how Cruz can peel off enough Democrat votes to overturn a White House veto.
