Michel: The EU Vigilant On Attempts To Aid Russia

EU

EU leaders Charles Michel and Ursula von der Leyen have spoken at a presser following the EU-China summit. They made comments suggesting that China will face economic consequences should they provide military or economic aid to Russia.

  • EU President Charles Michel: 'Today's summit is not business as usual. Its a wartime summit. EU top priority is to stop the war as soon as possible.'
  • Michel: 'Dialogue is needed more than ever. The EU and China agreed that this war is threatening global security and the world economy. It is not in China or the EU's interest.'
  • Michel: 'We called on China to help end the war in Ukraine. China cannot turn a blind eye to Russia's actions in Ukraine. We have imposed heavy sanctions on Russia.'
  • Michel: 'Any attempts to circumvent sanctions or provide aid to Russia would prolong the war. This is not in anyone's long term interests. We will remain vigilant on any attempt to aid Russia.'
  • Leyen: 'We made sure they China must not interfere with our sacntions.'
  • Leyen: 'This would cause a major reputational risk to China in the EU.'
  • Leyen: 'Every day China and EU trade 2 billion Euros. A prolongation of the war is not in China's best interests.'
