MNI BRIEF: Aussie Household Spending Slows As Rate Hikes Bite

The Reserve Bank of Australia rate hikes have taken heat out of household spending, which fell for a third consecutive month in November, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Household spending increased 11.4% y/y in November, down from 20.9% in October. The pace of spending peaked at 29.2% in August.

The spending data, which is based on bank transactions, showed spending on services rose 24%, while goods spending increased 1.2%. Non-discretionary spending rose 17.1% and discretionary spending gained 6.3%. The RBA next meets on February 7.
