MNI BRIEF: BCB's Neto Says Better To Stick With Fiscal Targets
Central Bank of Brazil Governor Roberto Campos Neto said it obviously has an effect on monetary policy.
Brazil's Central Bank Governor Roberto Campos Neto said on Monday that it's best not to change fiscal targets, adding that it "obviously" has an effect on monetary policy.
"Ideal is not to change targets and to ensure that you do the most you can in terms of effort to achieve it. And if, for some reason, you have to make a detour on that, it's very important to communicate well," he said at an event sponsored by the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. He was asked whether the change in Brazil's fiscal target for 2025, announced today, could interfere with the monetary policy path.
Earlier, Minister of Finance Fernando Haddad confirmed a shift in the fiscal target to a zero primary deficit as a percentage of gross domestic product in 2025. The previous goal was 0.5% of GDP. (See CORRECTED-MNI: Changing Brazil Fiscal Target Not "Plan A")
