Preliminary data shows Canadian factory sales rose 0.5% in August.

Canadian factory sales rose 0.5% in August according to a flash government estimate, a welcome sign after the economy shrank in the second quarter and an advance figure for July suggested the third quarter began with a further decline.

Factory gains were led by energy, chemicals and metals, Statistics Canada said Wednesday. The agency's official figures showed sales fell 1.5% in July.
