MNI BRIEF: Lords Committee Unease Over BOE QE Programme

There is a strong perception that the Bank of England's post-pandemic quantitative easing was done to help underpin the huge government financing efforts seen since March 2020, a report published Friday by the Lord's Economic Afairs Committee says.

Alongside the report's release, Lord Bridges, a LEAC member, told MNI there were many issues surrounding the BOE's QE programme and the perceptions around financing the public debt could become a serious problem for policymakers and the bank's independence if and when it moved to tighten policy in the future.
