MNI POLICY: China Suspends UK Hong Kong Extradition Treaties

Beijing moves to halt extradition treaties with UK, Canada and Australia

China is suspending Hong Kong extradition treaties with Canada, Australia and the U.K. after the three countries announced their own suspensions in recent days, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin said Tuesday.

In addition to the extradition treaties, China is also suspending Hong Kong's criminal justice assistance treaties with them, Wang added.

The three countries suspended extradition treaties with Hong Kong after China imposed sweeping national security measures in the former British colony. Wang described the actions as "grossly interfering in China's internal affairs and seriously violated international law and the basic norms of international relations."
