MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS-G20 Summit Preview

Leaders from across the G20 group of 19 of the world’s most powerful developed and emerging markets and the European Union meet in the Indian capital, New Delhi, from 9-10 September. The event that has had one of the most substantial lead-ups of any G20 summit to date. The Indian government has sought to use its year-long presidency to enhance its credentials on the world stage as a leading voice of the ‘Global South’.

However, rather than the focus being on India’s hosting and the potential for high-level multilateral and bilateral discussions, the main topic of conversation surrounds those leaders that will be absent from the proceedings. Most notably, Chinese President Xi Jinping will not be in New Delhi, denying the opportunity for a similar set-piece as at the 2022 summit in Bali, where Xi and US President Joe Biden held talks and were photographed together on the meeting’s sidelines.
