Monday 14 November:

  • US-China: US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping meet in Bali, Indonesia for their first in-person meeting while in office. Both sides talked up the need to improve relations, with Xi’s opening statement saying that he looks “forward to working with you [Biden] to bring China-US relations back to the track of healthy and stable growth”. Meanwhile, a White House opening statement said that the two “will discuss efforts to maintain and deepen lines of communication […], responsibly manage competition, and work together where our interests align, especially on transnational challenges that affect the international community.”
  • United States:The House of Representatives and Senate return following the frantic midterm election campaign with a significant amount of business on the lame-duck docket. With 17 legislative days left in the year, Congress has to pass an omnibus spending bill by 16 December to keep the federal government funded, and the National Defense Authorization Act to ensure funding for the military.
