Monday 16 August:

  • United Nations: Security Council meeting at 1000ET (1500BST, 1600CET) to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. On the night of 15 August, 60 nations including the US, France, Germany, and the UK released a joint statement stating that all parties should "respect and facilitate, the safe and orderly departure of foreign nationals and Afghans who wish to leave the country." Security Council permanent members Russia and China were not signatories to the statement.
  • Canada:Federal election campaign kicks off in earnest following PM Justin Trudeau's announcement on 15 August. Trudeau is in Quebec before travelling to Cobourg, Ontario, a riding the Conservatives won off the Liberals in the 2019 election. Conservative leader Erin O'Toole delivers a 'major announcement' at 1100ET followed by two virtual town-hall meetings with Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario.
  • European Union: EU's Political and Security Committee, formed by member states' permanent representatives to the EU, meets for a virtual meeting at 1500CET (0900ET, 1400BST) to discuss the collapse of the Afghan government and the takeover of the nation by the Taliban. Committee will also discuss the situation in Belarus with regards to migrant flows into EU member states (notably Lithuania) from Belarus.
  • Poland:16 August is the deadline for the Polish government to deliver an explanation in writing to the European Commission on how it intends to comply with two ECJ rulings regarding the Polish government's disciplinary regime for its judiciary. EU expecting 'conciliatory language' from Warsaw, with sanctions on Poland not expected presently.
  • France:President Emmanuel Macron holds a virtual defence council meeting on the situation in Afghanistan. Politico reporting that Macron is likely to deliver a public address on the subject at 2000CET (1400ET, 1900BST).
  • South Korea, Argentina: Public holidays for Liberation Day, San Martin Day.
