MNI POLITICAL RISK ANALYSIS - Week Ahead 24-30 June

(MNI) London – All timings subject to change.

Monday 24 June:

  • European Union: Foreign Affairs Council meets in Luxembourg, with foreign ministers set to discuss the state of the war in Ukraine, with FM Dmytro Kuleba attending virtually, as well as hold talks on the situation in the Middle East regarding Gaza and tensions on the Israeli-Lebanese border – notably in light of Hezbollah leadership making overt threats towards EU member Cyprus.
  • Canada:By-election takes place in the Toronto-St. Paul’s riding following the resignation of incumbent Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett. The seat has been held by the Liberals since 1993 and has historically been seen as a stronghold for PM Justin Trudeau’s party. However, the opposition Conservatives have sought to make the contest a ‘referendum’ on Trudeau’s leadership. Expectations are for the Liberals to hold the riding, but speculation has mounted that a Conservative win could even spark calls within the Liberal Party for Trudeau to stand down before the next general election due by October 2025.
