MNI POLITICAL RISK - Biden Weathers Crisis Of Confidence
Daily round-up of news from the US.
Executive Summary:
- US President Joe Biden appears to have, at least temporarily, weathered a two-week crisis of confidence after House and Senate Democratic meetings failed to result in a cascade of calls for Biden to step aside. But, the current status quo is uneasy, and Biden’s electability looks increasingly shaky.
- After the Senate meeting, Colorado Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO) told CNN that Trump, “is on track, I think, to win this election and maybe win it by a landslide..."
- Bennet’s concerns appear credible, as a string of polls show that Biden’s support in key swing states appears to have collapsed since the presidential debate. The Cook Political Report moved six states toward Trump, an AARP poll showed Biden trailing Trump by seven points in Wisconsin, and perhaps even more concerning for Biden: New York may now be in play. Moreover, for the first time in more than 20 years, a Republican presidential candidate is leading the horse race at this point in the cycle.
- The NATO leaders' summit gets underway today, with focus on Ukraine and NATO spending targets. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Capitol amid uncertainty over continued US support for Ukraine if former President Donald Trump wins a second term.
- President Biden yesterday signed a bipartisan bill to bolster nuclear power by cutting fees, reducing environmental red tape, and speeding up licensing for new projects.
- Poll of the Day: New York Democrats are worried that New York could be competitive in November.
