MNI POLITICAL RISK - US And China Establish Working Group

Executive Summary:

  • US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo kicked off her four-day China trip today by announcing that she, and her counterpart, Wang Wentao, have agreed to establish a new “commercial issues working group” which will meet twice annually to “seek solutions on trade and investment issues and to advance U.S. commercial interests in China.”
  • Raimondo, the first Commerce Secretary to visit China in seven years, has been tasked with stabilising business ties with Beijing whilst maintaining the Biden administration's robust stance on restricting China’s access to certain technologies.
  • Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley may be the biggest winner from last week's the first Republican presidential debate. Post-debate polling suggests that Haley received significant bumps in both favourability and awareness.
  • The US military will begin training Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter planes in Tucson, Arizona in September but delivery of the hardware appears unlikely to happen until next year, at the earliest.
  • Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is seeking another meeting with Joe Biden at the G-20 next month as the two NATO allies repair relations.
  • Poll of the Day: 58% of likely Republican primary voters back Trump.
