MNI POLITICAL RISK – What To Expect From The Ukraine Contact Group

SECURITY

It has been a hectic week of diplomacy surrounding the war in Ukraine. The MNI Political Risk Team has provided a summary of the events of the week and what to expect on Friday 20 January when defence representatives from around 50 countries are convened by US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin for an eighth meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

  • According to the US Department of Defense, the Ukraine Contact Group is designed, “to provide the Ukrainian people with the means necessary to defend their sovereign territory.”
  • The nuance of the mission to “defend” Ukrainian territory will be debated at the meeting after the United Kingdom's watershed decision to send main battle tanks to Ukraine.
  • Pressure is mounting on Germany to approve the release of German-made Leopard tanks and a decision, expected to come at the UCG meeting on Friday, will likely be the first major decision taken by new German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.
