Moderate Republican Caucus Outlines Debt Ceiling Demands

US

The moderate Republican Main Street Caucus has written a letter to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) outlining demands for debt ceiling negotiations which include limiting the growth of non-discretionary spending to 1.5% for the next 10 years, reversing the White House student loan forgiveness initiative, and establishing a mandatory spending commission.

  • Caucus Chair Dusty Johnson (R-SD) and Vice Chair Stephanie Bice (R-OK) wrote: “We cannot support a debt ceiling increase without much-needed fiscal reforms...
  • “...the 70 members of the Republican Main Street Caucus have discussed the options you’ve identified, as well as some others... we have every confidence they can secure 218 votes in the U.S. House of Representatives.
  • The letter states that McCarthy continues to have the "full support" of the caucus despite recent reports of infighting within the House GOP leadership group.
  • Congress returns from a two-week recess next week and McCarthy is reportedly preparing a legislative text for a House vote by the end of May.
  • Politico reports that the primary intention of the vote will be to "demonstrate to Democrats that [Republicans are] serious about refusing a “clean” debt limit."
