Netanyahu Summons Def Min Before Latter's Address On Judicial Reforms

ISRAEL

Wires reporting that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has summoned Defence Minister Yoav Galant shortly before the latter is set to deliver an address that is believed to relate to the controversial judicial reforms proposed by the gov't. Galant is due to speak at around 1930 local time (1330ET/1730GMT), with Netanyahu delivering his own address at 2000 local time having postponed his trip to the UK.

  • Unclear what Netanyahu's demand for a meeting is intended to achieve. Clear signs of major divisions within his Likud party between moderates like Galant and right-wingers who avowedly back the reforms against what they view as an activist judiciary that is part of the left-wing establishment.
