No Labels Votes To Move Forward With Presidential Bid Without Candidate

US

The centrist political organisation, No Labels, has voted internally in favour of proceeding with its 2024 third-party presidential bid despite not having a high-profile candidate willing to lead the ticket.

  • Politico reports: "...an official with the group acknowledged during the gathering that they currently do not have a candidate and may not find one."
  • The group has been turned down by former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan - who will instead run for the open Maryland Senate seat, outgoing Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Nikki Haley has distanced herself from the group.
  • Politico notes: "Democrats fear that a No Labels ticket could greatly damage President Joe Biden’s prospects for reelection, deriding the group as a stalking horse for likely GOP nominee Donald Trump."
  • ABC News reports: "With Friday's go-ahead, No Labels will enter a second phase of their process and spend the next few weeks finalizing the group's candidate selection process. As a final step, No Labels will reconvene and present its candidate to the group for approval."
