Open Interest in Crude Options Rises Driven by Put Volumes

The aggregate open interest in ICE Brent options has increased this year driven mainly but a rise in open put option positions. Put option open interest is up to 1.195m as call positions hold relatively steady at 1.51m lots.

  • The average aggregate daily Brent options volume so far this month is at 164k compared to an average of 144k in February. WTI options volumes are 127k so far in March up from 112k in February.
  • In the last month put option positions have been added mostly at strikes between 65$/bbl and 80$/bbl and call option positions have been added mostly at strikes between 90$/bbl and 100$/bbl.
  • The key open put option positions are spread between 50$/bbl to 80$/bbl and the main call volumes are between 80$/bbl and 110$/bbl with some exposures out to 130$/bbl.
