Parliament To Find Date For Revisiting Phala Phala Affair

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The National Assembly's Programming Committee yesterday discussed the main opposition Democratic Alliance's proposal to hold another vote on establishing an ad hoc committee into the Phala Phala scandal. This comes after the Constitutional Court denied the President direct access to challenge the Section 89 panel report, prolonging Ramaphosa's legal fight to overturn the document. Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqalula said that a date for the vote proposed by the DA will be presented at next week's meeting of the agenda-setting committee.
  • During his Q&A session in parliament yesterday, President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that the Department of Public Enterprises will cease to exist in future and the state-owned companies it oversees will revert back to relevant line departments. The President did not give any provisional timeline for the process, noting that it will be a long-term one. He added that his administration will look into merging some departments to streamline government work.
  • Newly appointed Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa was also tight-lipped about the timelilne for his key tasks, noting that "it is highly irresponsible to just shoot from the hip and say this date, that date" when it comes to forecasting the end of the ongoing load-shedding crisis.
