PD Takes 2nd Place In Polls Following Leftist Schlein's Election

ITALY

The latest opinion polling from Italy shows the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) taking possession of second place following the election of leftist candidate Elly Schlein on 26 February. In March, the PD has averaged 18.0% support compared to 16.2% for the populist 5-Star Movement (M5S). Both sit will behind PM Giorgia Meloni's conservative Brothers of Italy (FdI), averaging 29.4% support in March.

  • Whether Schlein can boost the fortunes of the PD is important for Italian politics. The Italian political left has struggled in recent years, unable to garner support amid rising public antipathy towards the EU and large scale immigration. Schlein's green and progressive leadership is seen as a risk. It could scare off more moderate voters, providing the right with long-term domination of Italian politics. Alternatively, she could engage young and disaffected voters previously put off by establishment options.
  • The centre-right Meloni coalition, alongside the League and Forza Italia holds a comfortable majority in both houses. However, there are notable policy differences (especially on Ukraine) and while so far the junior partners have remained largely quiet, there is no guarantee that this remains the case should inflationary pressures on households and businesses remain high.
