Pelosi: Taiwan Visit Does Not Contradict US Policy

US-CHINA

The office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has released a statement upon her arrival on the self governing island of Taiwan.

  • "Our Congressional delegation's visit to Taiwan honors America's unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan's vibrant democracy."
  • The statement claims that the Taiwan trip is part of a broader Asia trip dedicated to "mutual security, economic partnership, and democratic governance."
    • Although the statement does not directly link Taiwan with "mutual security" the implicit connection of the two concepts in the statement is likely to draw a hostile response from Beijing.
  • The statement continues: "America's solidarity with the 23 million people of Taiwan is more important today than ever as the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy."
  • The statement concludes by reaffirming what President Biden told his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping last week, repeated again yesterday by NATSEC Spox John Kirby at the White House: "Out visit of one of several congressional delegations to Taiwan - and it in no way contradicts longstanding US policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, US-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances. the US continues to oppose unilateral efforts to change the status quo."
