Petro Maintains Strong Approval

LATAM

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has so far avoided a significant collapse in approval that leftist presidents in neighbouring Chile and Peru have suffered.

  • Chile President Gabriel Boric has seen his popularity collapse following supply chain problems, rising energy prices, and the endorsement of a new constitution, seen by many in Chile as too liberal.
  • Petro will need to maintain a strong approval rating if he is going to have success pushing his transformative domestic reform agenda.
  • Morning Consult: "Petro has proposed major changes to the tax code, health care system and pension plans...
  • But Petro is biting off a lot more than that. He has proposed an overhaul of environmental policy, the end of drug war tactics that unduly affect the poor, the continuation of the 2016 peace process with armed paramilitaries and the normalization of relations with Venezuela."
