Physically Possible for UK Rough Storage this Winter

NATURAL GAS

Centrica CEO said it is physically possible for Rough Storage to reopen this winter.

  • Last week Centrica was awarded a gas storage licence for its closed Rough site.
  • Discussions are ongoing with Centrica previously saying it will only be viable with government support.
  • The return would be gradual and would initially take around 10 LNG cargoes with hope to double capacity for next winter.
  • The site closed due to cost of repairs required to keep it running and previously provided about 70% of Britain’s gas storage capacity. The Rough facility is a depleted natural gas field and could store approximately 9 days’ worth of UK gas demand.
  • Further approvals are required before gas storage operations can commence.
