PM Holds Call w/Russia's Putin, Calls For Ukraine 'Dialogue & Diplomacy'

The office of Indian PM Narendra Modi has confirmed a call took place between Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier today. PMO:"In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, PM Modi reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy as the only way forward..."

  • PMO says the two reviewed, "several aspects of the bilateral relationship, including energy cooperation, trade and investments, defence and security cooperation and other areas."
  • This week it was confirmed that Modi would not visit Russia for the 21st annual summit between the nations' leaders due to 'scheduling issues'.
  • Call comes days after a clash between Indian and Chinese troops on the disputed border (the Line of Actual Control) between the two nations in Arunachal Pradesh in the Himalayas. Signs showing of some strain in Moscow-Beijing relations in recent weeks after they had grown closer since the pandemic. For India, keeping Russia - an important military supplier to New Delhi - on side remains an important concern.
