PM Suga Will Decide On Election Date Once COVID-19 Under Control: Kyodo

JAPAN

Japan's Kyodo News reporting that Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will decide on the date of this year's general election once the COVID-19 pandemic is under control.

  • The election has to be held by 22 October 2021 at the latest.
  • The main question in the run-up to the election is not which party will win - Suga's centre-right Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is all-but-guaranteed a majority - but who will lead the LDP into the election.
  • The LDP is yet to hold its leadership contest, which will take place before the general election. Suga, who took over from Japan's longest-ever serving PM Shinzo Abe in September 2020, had hoped the 4 July Tokyo prefectural elections would provide a timely boost for his leadership. However, in the end the LDP recorded its second-worst result ever in the capital city.
  • A successful Olympic Games - even if held behind closed doors - could provide some relief to Suga's re-election campaign. However, a sustained increase in COVID-19 cases and lengthy state of emergency periods could turn senior party members against offering their support to Suga once again.
