PM Sunak-'I Don't Want To Put Up Taxes Any More': RTRS

UK

Reuters reporting comments from UK PM Rishi Sunak stating that future tax hikes could be out of the question. Responding to a question from a healthcare worker on public sector pay, Sunak stated that, "I don't want to put any of your taxes up...Figuring out how to pay for these things is part of my job and ... where we are with taxes at the moment, we can't put them up anymore, right, and we need to be getting them down. So that's what constrains me on one end."

  • The gov't faces significant domestic political pressure over public sector pay, with the UK having experienced some of its most disruptive periods of industrial action in decades in recent months with workers in the healthcare, transportation, and education sectors - among others - going on strike.
  • Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt is set to deliver the next Budget on 15 March. Last week he delivered a speech seeking to outline the UK gov'ts growth plan. He has also sought to downplay the prospect of any tax cuts coming in the short term.
