POWER: Carbon Tax Limits Climate Policies: Study

The introduction of a carbon tax has prevented some governments from implementing climate policies needed to limit global peak temperature rise below 1.5C, research professor at the University of Maryland Christoph Bertram said.

  • However, speeding up renewable deployment would give a 50% chance of limiting global warming below 1.6C – the best-case scenario.
  • The 1.5C threshold was set in 2015 as part of the Paris Agreement - which established a framework for limiting global warming to below 1.5C.
