President Biden Makes Unannounced Trip To Kyiv

SECURITY

US President Joe Biden has made an unscheduled trip to Kyiv to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ahead of the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

  • Biden said in a statement: "I am in Kyiv today to meet with President Zelenskyy and reaffirm our unwavering and unflagging commitment to Ukraine's democracy, sovereignty, and territorial integrity," and said he will shortly announce a new package of security assistance and additional sanctions.
  • Biden: "When Putin launched his invasion nearly one year ago, he thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He thought he could outlast us. But he was dead wrong."
  • The visit comes at a critical moment for Ukraine with Russia preparing a new large-scale offensive and Western support for Ukraine seen as faltering. EU lawmakers are struggling to overcome military hardware shortfalls, failing to alight on a 10th sanctions package, and domestic pushback in the US more vocally opposed to providing Ukraine with a "blank cheque."
  • Biden will now head to Poland where he will deliver a speech to mark the anniversary and hold meetings with leaders of the "Bucharest Nine-" NATO countries on Europe's Eastern flank.
