President Biden To Deliver Remarks On National Security Supplemental

US

US President Joe Biden will deliver remarks shortly on his national security supplemental request which includes over USD$100 bln of funding for Ukraine, Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and other allies. The supplemental appears to have no clear pathway through Congress after Republicans this week torpedoed a bipartisan border security deal designed to unlock a vote. LIVESTREAM

  • Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), the lead Democrat negotiator in border security talks, said: "How can you trust any Republicans right now? They told us what to do. We followed their instructions to the letter. And then they pulled the rug out from under us in 24 hrs.”
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said on the Senate floor: "The sun may be shining outside, but today's a gloomy day here in the United States Senate..."
  • What comes next is unclear: There is no obvious plan B for Ukraine aid and there appears no route to legislating any border policy while it remains a live political issue for Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
  • Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is pressing on with a plan to carve Israel funding from Biden's package for a standalone vote in the House. Biden said in a statement that he will veto the bill and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) will whip his conference against it.
  • Biden's remarks will be his first public address since the US military struck dozens on sites across the Middle East in response to an attack which killed three US personnel in Jordan late last month.
