President Biden To Meet Quad Leaders Tomorrow

GLOBAL POLITICAL RISK

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has issued a statement confirming that President Biden will meet with leaders from the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue tomorrow, alongside the G7 Leaders Summit in Hiroshima, for an adhoc summit in lieu of next week's Quad summit in Sydney, Australia, cancelled due to Biden's commitment to debt limit talks.

  • The White House statement includes an apology from Biden for withdrawing from the summit with critics arguing that the move undermines the Biden Administration's Indo-Pacific strategy and bolsters Chinese assertions that Washington is an unreliable regional partner.
  • Jean-Pierre: "...tomorrow, in addition to the G7, President Biden will participate in the third in-person Quad Leaders' meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India."
  • The White House says that the leaders will share strategic assessments and "welcome new forms of Quad cooperation on secure digital technology, submarine cables, infrastructure capacity building, and maritime domain awareness."
  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Papua New Guinea on Sunday to salvage a key defence agreement with Pacific Island Nations.
