Press Briefing Summary

WHITE HOUSE
Jen Psaki Press Briefing at the White House.
  • Ukraine crisis: Troop deployment not a decision made on events of the past few days. Discussions have been ongoing for weeks with Allies.
  • Confirms what Kirby said at the Pentagon: 1000 troops from Germany to Romania, 1700 troops Fort Bragg to Poland. 300 troops from Fort Bragg to Germany.
  • These troops will supplement existing forces and are not included in the 8,500 personnel already placed on heightened alert.
  • Putin has remained on an escalatory path therefore the US has abided by article 5 commitments to NATO Allies. This is not a permanent deployment. If Russia decides to de-escalate then that would influence US deployments.
  • Legislation: Psaki cut short question about Senator Joe Manchin and Build Back Better. ‘The White House will not divulge private conversations between the President and members of Congress.’
  • America Competes: The President is keen to sign this into law. The GOP whipping against the bill is 'ludicrous'.
  • Senator Luján: Psaki avoids questions on how the legislative agenda will proceed in the light of Luján’s missing vote.
  • Supreme Court: Will the President make a similar pledge for Asian American Supreme Court justice? There are no new pledges to announce but courts across the country are ‘more diverse’.
  • Energy: Will Qatar confirm diverting gas to Europe? The US is talking to a range of countries and suppliers about resolving Europe’s gas crisis. Qatar is important but not the only one.
