President Vladimir Putin states in his address to the Federal Assembly that the local elections later this year, and the presidential election slated for 2024 will be held 'in line with the law'. Putin has not announced his candidacy for re-election yet, but it is viewed as simply a matter of time until this is confirmed.
- Under the constitution, a Russian president is permitted to serve two six-year terms in total. While Putin has now served four terms in office, the 2020 constitutional amendments re-set the clock on his tenure. This means that Putin would - in the likely event that he wins the 2024 vote - be able to serve his term until 2030, and run again for a further term until 2036 (when he would be 83 years old).
