Putin Publishes Letter In Chinese State Media Ahead Of Xi Meeting

Russian President Vladimir Putin has published a letter in Chinese state-owned Xinhua ahead of a meeting between he and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

  • Putin explicitly mentions sanctions and raises prospect of separate payments system if financial services hit by the West "We are consistently expanding settlements in national currencies and creating mechanisms to offset the negative impact of unilateral sanctions."
  • The letter comes amidst the most severe tensions between Russia and the West in decades over Ukraine. During the meeting in Beijing, Chinese experts in the media have speculated that Xi could encourage Putin to hold back on any aggressive actions towards Ukraine - at least in the short term - as not to distract from the Winter Olympic Games currently taking place in the Chinese capital.
