Right-Wing AfD Continue Polling Surge, Challenging SPD For 2nd Place

GERMANY

The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) has continued its recent surge in opinion polling, claiming third place nationwide from the environmentalist Greens and in some polls challenging the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz for second. There is still a substantial amount of time until the next German federal election is due (Oct 2025 at the latest). However, lasting difficulties of the three governing parties - SPD, Greens and pro-business liberal Free Democrats (FDP) - in holding onto support could exacerbate already clear tensions in the coalition.

  • The next state-level elections take place on 8 October in the central state of Hesse and in the Germany's largest state by area, Bavaria. The AfD has never made significant challenges in either state, which are both run by the conservative Christian Democratic/Social Union (CDU/CSU) in coalition with smaller parties. However, outperformance by the AfD could be a signal of a potential strengthening of the party's support outside of its historical strongholds in the former East Germany.
  • Public dissatisfaction with the rate of immigration, the impact of climate policies on individuals' household finances, the broader inflationary pressures hitting households, and consistent intra-governing coalition squabbles are all seen to have contributed to the AfD's surge.
