Russia Denies US Accusations Over MQ-9 Drone Incident; Putin to Meet Syria’s Assad

  • Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov said he had rejected all Washington's insinuations of the US side regarding Tuesday’s incident involving the MQ-9 Reaper drone of the US above the Black Sea, Tass reports. "I stressed that the American UAV that was moving deliberately and provocatively towards the Russian territory with its transponders turned off," Antonov said.
  • The Japanese government is considering keeping Russia off the list of most favored nations for another year, Bloomberg cite Kyodo as reporting. Japan revoked the trade status last year as a punishment on Russia for its aggression in Ukraine; the measure is set to expire at the end of this month.
  • The US sanctions package imposed in late February include a ban on all supplies of gas turbines and spare parts to Russia and could cause problems for key Russian export projects, Kommersant report.
  • The navies of China, Russia and Iran will conduct a joint military drill from March 15-19 in the Gulf of Oman, according to China’s Ministry of National Defense.
  • Turkish, Russian, Iranian, and Syrian deputy foreign ministers will meet in Russia’s capital Moscow on March 15-16 for talks on Syria, according to diplomatic sources cited by Hurriyet. Moscow has played a pivotal role in fighting back armed opposition groups trying to topple Assad’s government through its military support and has also aggressively backed Damascus against opponents at the United Nations.
