Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Sochi, Russia today for a meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Wires and social media carrying comments attributed to Erdogan that state 'Russia and Turkey should discuss defence cooperation'

  • Adds that the two are already acting together on the world stage in theatres such as Libya and Syria.
  • Erdoga: 'Certain places in the UN General Assembly specifically asked us about some issues. It is impossible to take a step back....I believe that Turkey and Russia will take better and stronger steps with each passing day...Peace in Syria also depends on us.'
  • The developing relations between Erdogan and Putin will be watched intently in Western capitals, with Turkey's position within NATO increasingly called into question given Anakara's purchases of Russian materiel.
