S. Africa Petitions ICJ On Gaza Situation Again, Retail Sales On Tap Today

  • South Africa has taken legal action over Israel's military operation in Gaza again. Presidential spokesman Vincent Magwenya said that Pretoria has made an urgent call on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to order Israel to halt its airstrikes on the city of Rafah, which has become a key refuge for surviving civilians. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor reaffirmed her view that Israel is ignoring an earlier ICJ order to restrain its military operation.
  • ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula will lead the party's delegation to Moscow, where political formations from several countries of the Global South will meet for a forum on neocolonialism between February 15-17. Delegations from multiple countries allied with Russia have confirmed their attendance. Mbalula's trip could further weigh on South Africa's relations with the US.
  • South Africa's December retail sales will be published at 11:00GMT/13:00SAST. Real retail sales may have shrunk 0.1% Y/Y in December, according to a Bloomberg consensus forecast, after a 0.9% contraction in November.
