S. Korea's Spy Agency Warns North Could Test New ICBM Soon, North Escalates Rhetoric

NORTH KOREA

Bloomberg runs comments from South Korean lawmakers who spoke with reporters after a briefing with the National Intelligence Service, which provided them with an update on North Korea.

  • Lawmakers said that North Korea may conduct large-scale exercises involving unconventional weapons in March or April and test a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). South Korea's spy agency also believes that the North could launch a spy satellite in April.
  • North Korea's state broadcaster KCNA earlier today circulated comments from Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of the country's Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. She warned that the North is ready to take "overwhelming" action against military activity by the U.S. and South Korea.
  • Kim Yo-jong also said that Pyongyang will consider any interception of its missiles as a "clear declaration of war" if it takes place "against our tests of strategic weapons that are conducted without being detrimental to the security of neighbouring countries."
