Saudi Official Says Explosion Near Jeddah Port Was Terrorist Attack

An official from the Saudi energy ministry has said that an explosion that occurred off the coast of the port of Jeddah earlier today was a terrorist attack aimed at an oil tanker.

  • The attack on the Hafnia tanker BW Rhine is the latest in a series of attacks on fuel carriers in and around Saudi powers in recent weeks.
  • According to local reports the intentional detonation of a ship near the tanker only caused a small fire, with no casualties reported.
  • In the past, the rebel Houthis, who are fighting a long-term civil war in Yemen against the Saudi-backed gov't, have claimed responsibility for some attacks on shipping in the region.
