(MNI) London - French President Emmanuel Macron is set to host German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Paris for private talks ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to Europe - taking in Hungary, Serbia, and France - from 5 May onwards. Relations between the two EU heavyweights have been if not cold then at least tepid in recent months. Macron's comments earlier in the year regarding the prospect of NATO/French troops being deployed on the ground in Ukraine (repeated today in Macron's interview with The Economist) caused an immediate rebuttal from the German chancellor.
- Politico reports that the meeting is, "a chance for Scholz to brief Macron about his meeting with Xi in Beijing last month. Scholz and Macron also disagree on the potential imposition of EU tariffs on subsidized Chinese electric vehicles. [...] Macron will try to convince the chancellor to join him for his meeting with Xi next week, alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen."
- The two are also likely to talk broader European security. Here, another division could arise on the topic of 'defence eurobonds', with Macron in favour of joint EU debt issuance to fund the Union's security, while Scholz - as a key figure in the 'frugal' nations - is seen as being against such action.
