Scholz Talks On Gas Cap, Russia, EU-China

GERMANY

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz speaking in the Bundestag on a number of topics including EU-China relations, Russia sanctions, and EU energy policy.

  • On energy: "There are no instant fixes, we cannot intervene in prices in such a way that too little gas is supplied to Europe." Essentially stating that he will not allow the imposition of a low gas price cap advocated by some EU member states. Scholz: "I am confident that an EU deal on a gas price cap can be found."
  • On China: "China remains important as an economic and trade partner, and we must discuss many global issues with china.[...] I have clearly expressed our concerns over growing uncertainty in the South China Sea and Strait of Taiwan:"
  • On Russia and war in Ukraine: " We will keep sanctions on Russia and intensify them further for as long as Putin continues his brutal war [...] We will support Ukraine for as long as it's needed".
  • On Hungary's vetoes of Ukraine aid: "Attempts to undermine EU values by blocking foreign security policy will fail". However, this stands in contrast to joint German-French effort to dilute Commission-recommended withholding of cohesion funds to Hungary, meaning Budapest will now vote for Ukraine aid.
