Schumer: Debt Ceiling Negotiations Are Making Progress

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has announced on the Senate floor that progress is being made on a bipartisan debt ceiling bill and confirming that the Senate will return to Washington during next week's planned recess to conduct work on any House-passed legislation.

  • Schumer: "Members should remain and be able to return to the Senate within a 24 hour period.. to avoid a default."
  • Schumer's comments comes at progressive Senate Democrats continue to express unease with concessions being made to Republican priorities in negotiations.
  • 14 Democrat aligned Senators have now signed a letter to President Biden urging him to "...exercise your authority under the 14th Amendment" to raise the debt limit.
  • A group of Senators including Bernie Sanders (I-VT), and John Fetterman (D-PA), and Elizabeth Warren (D-PA), told reporters a few moments ago that the White House must continue to press Republicans to vote on a clean debt limit bill.
  • Fetterman: "We must be prepared to use the 14th Amendment."
