Senate Releases Border Deal, Johnson Declares Bill "DOA" In House 1/2

US

Senate negotiators have released the final textof their long-awaited US-Mexico border security bill as part of a USD$118 legislative package which includes President Biden's National Security supplemental request for new funding for Ukraine and other US allies.

  • The bill proposes the biggest overhaul of border policy in decades, closing pathways to asylum, boosting detention capacity, and providing the White House enhanced powers to shut down the border if migrant crossings exceed a daily or weekly threshold.
  • Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) intends to hold a procedural vote on the package on Wednesday but there are major concerns that the bill can overcome a weeks-long campaign from former President Donald Trump, and his allies in the House, to block passage of the legislation.
  • President Biden said in a statement: “If you believe, as I do, that we must secure the border now, doing nothing is not an option... House Republicans have to decide. Do they want to solve the problem? Or do they want to keep playing politics with the border?
