Serbian Elections Sunday

EUROPE

Serbia will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on Sunday, April 3.

  • Polls indicate that incumbent President Alexander Vucic is likely to win a five-year term with his Serbian Progressive Party a slightly smaller majority in parliament.
  • Serbia has refused to join the West in sanctioning Russia and continues to maintain good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
  • Vucic has declared 'support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine' and Serbia supported the UN resolution against Russia’s aggression.
  • However, a continued refusal to take action against Putin may affect Serbia's European aspirations. The EU has made clear that it expects EU candidate nations must follow EU foreign policy. A European Parliament resolution condemning Russia also singled out Serbia for criticism on sanctions last week reading: 'The EU strongly regrets Serbia’s non-alignment with EU sanctions against Russia, which damages its EU accession process.'
  • the EU and the US are likely to increase pressure on Serbia to back Western sanctions after the elections.
