Some LNG Vessels Diverting Away from Red Sea Passage

LNG

ICIS has flagged a number of LNG vessel diversions because of recent attacks in the Bab al-Mandab strait.

  • LNG vessel Celsius Copenhagen was the most dramatic recent diversion away from the Bab al-Mandab strait according to ICIS. It had gone south through the Suez Canal but turned back north and went back through Suez again.
  • It is now waiting in the Med, signalling Kalamata, a waiting point off Greece.
  • The Celsius Charlotte and Celsius Geneva were approaching from the east on their return from Asia but started moving south to go around the Cape of Good Hope, Africa instead of through the Suez Canal.
  • BP's Cool Runner, with a US cargo onboard, was signalling a course to the Suez Canal for 18 December according to ICIS tracking, likely originally Asia bound. It then switched to unload at least part of its cargo into Revithoussa, Greece instead and is now heading to Bilbao, Spain, potentially to unload the rest.
  • Qatari flows – the most important for Europe - appear to still be transiting the Suez helping to stop a meaningful TTF price rise this week.
