Speaker McCarthy: No Progress In Debt Limit Talks

US

Mychael Schnell at the Hill reports comments from House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stating that he sees no progress in debt ceiling talks ahead of tomorrow's key meeting between Congressional leaders and President Biden at the White House.

  • Schnell: "...Speaker McCarthy reiterates no progress in debt limit talks: 'I don't see any progress... I think the sign that you see from Biden, it's now 100 days, there's no real progress, and I think the president doesn't want a deal, I think he wants default.'"
  • President Biden and the four leaders of Congress - Speaker McCarthy, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) - held an hour-long meeting in the Oval Office on Tuesday but failed to announce any movement towards a resolution.
  • Representatives from the offices of the leaders and the White House met yesterday and will meet again today to lay the groundwork for a second White House meeting tomorrow.
  • After Tuesday's meeting Biden reiterated that he is willing to be flexible on spending but it must be done after "taking the threat of default off the table."
