Stoltenberg Refuses To Confirm That Ukraine Will Be Fast-Tracked Into NATO

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, delivering remarks at NATO HQ, has refused to be drawn on a question asking whether Ukraine will be fast-tracked NATO membership, as was in the case with Sweden and Finland.

  • Stoltenberg says: "A decision on membership has to be taken be all 30 allies by consensus."
  • Stoltenberg: "Focus now is on providing immediate support to Ukraine."
  • Today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a plea for fast-tracked membership in a video address following Russian President Vladimir Putin's annexation event.
  • Unanimity seen as unlikely considering the position of NATO member Hungary opposed to robust measures against Russia.
