Sullivan: "Time For Haggling" On Gaza Ceasefire Is "Over"

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, en route to the G7 summit in Italy, has told reporters that the US will work with Qatar and Egypt to "bridge final gaps" between the three-phase ceasefire proposal for Gaza outlined by President Biden on May 31 and the response from Hamas.

  • Sullivan says that Hamas has submitted a response to the proposal, which he notes is endorsed by the G7 and a United Nations Security Council resolution. Sullivan says that "many of the changes" proposed by Hamas are "minor," and "not unanticipated", but others "differ more substantively."
  • Sullivan says: "The time for haggling is over, it's time for a ceasefire to begin and for the hostages to come home."
  • On the G7 summit, Sullivan says Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will sign a bilateral security agreement, "making clear our support will last long into the future."
  • Sullivan says negotiations on a long-term bilateral agreement, which Biden initiated at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania last year, have concluded: "We want to demonstrate that we will continue to stand with Ukraine, not just tomorrow, but into the future."
  • Sullivan: "If [Russian President] Vladimir Putin thinks he can outlast the coalition supporting Ukraine, he is wrong... this agreement will show our resolve and continued resolve."
